MS Support

The MS Support Group: helpful, hopeful and monthly! That's A Fact: Although MS-related depression is well-known in the medical community, it is still widely underreported, underdiagnosed and undertreated.

Join us on Tuesday, July 23 for a discussion with mental health facilitator, Kay Helm. Kay will talk about how patients with MS, and their caregivers, can learn more about depression. MS comes with a variety of symptoms, often different for each person. But about half of people with MS share a common condition - depression. The disease can destroy the protective coating around nerves that helps the brain send signals that affect mood. So, MS itself might also cause depression. And depression is also a side effect of some the drugs that treat MS such as steroids and interferon.

Kay Helm is a co‑founder of the non‑profit agency Tributaries International. This agency trains mental health coordinators in different countries, handling local people for grief, trauma and mental health counseling. Kay is a licensed minister and has her masters in human services counseling.
